It is Thursday morning.

Ms. Williams asks us about last night.

She says: "What were you doing at 10:30 last night?"

I think about last night.

At 10:30 I was studying at my desk.

I was reading my grammar notes.

Lucas was cooking in the kitchen.

The TV was playing quietly in the background.

It was raining outside.

Then at 10:45 my phone rang.

It was my brother.

He was calling from Busan.

While I was talking to my brother Lucas was singing in the kitchen.

It was a good night.

👩‍🏫 Ms. Williams says:
"Today we learn the past continuous tense."

공식: was / were + 동사원형 + -ing

I am working now.
I was working at 10:30 last night.

It isn't raining now.
It wasn't raining when we went out.

📐 Grammar Point —

I / he / she / it was (not) doing / watching / playing
we / you / they were (not) swimming / living / singing

✅ I was working at 10:30 last night.
✅ It was raining, so we didn't go out.
✅ In 2009 we were living in Japan.
❌ I was work last night.
❌ They was playing. (WRONG — they → were)

Chapter 2 : 과거의 특정 순간 / A Specific Moment in the

Ms. Williams draws a timeline on the board.

She writes: 3:30 → 4:00 → 4:15
3:30 → 4:00 → 4:15

She says: "Rob started swimming at 3:30."

"He finished swimming at 4:15."

"At exactly 4:00 he was swimming."

She points at the middle of the timeline.

"This is the past continuous."

"It shows what was happening at a specific moment in the past."

"It is 6:00 now. Rob is home. He is watching TV."

"At 4:00 he wasn't at home. He was at the gym."

"He was swimming in the pool. He wasn't watching TV."

Carlos raises his hand.

He asks: "So the past continuous shows the middle of an action?"

Ms. Williams smiles: "Exactly. Not the beginning. Not the end. The middle."

👩‍🏫 Ms. Williams says:
"was/were + -ing = the past continuous."
was/were + -ing = 과거진행형.

He was swimming at 4:00.
He wasn't watching TV at 4:00.

What were you doing at 11:30 yesterday? Were you working?
"What did he say?" "I don't know. I wasn't listening."
It was raining, so we didn't go out.
In 2009 we were living in Japan.
