It is Monday morning.
월요일 아침입니다.

 

Ms. Williams starts class with a question.
윌리엄스 선생님이 질문으로 수업을 시작하십니다.

 

She says: "Tell me something you used to do as a child."
선생님이 말씀하십니다. "어렸을 때 하곤 했던 것을 말해보세요."

 

"Something you don't do anymore."
"더 이상 하지 않는 것."

 

Carlos goes first.
카를로스가 먼저 말합니다.

 

He says: "When I was a child I used to play football in the street every day."
그가 말합니다. "어렸을 때 저는 매일 거리에서 축구를 하곤 했어요."

 

"But now I don't play much. I just watch."
"하지만 지금은 많이 하지 않아요. 그냥 봐요."

 

Sofia smiles: "I used to have very long hair."

"Look."

She shows a photo on her phone.

Her hair used to be very long. Now it is short.

Lucas says: "I used to be scared of dogs."

"But now I have two dogs at home."

I say: "I used to read comic books every night before sleep."

Dave used to work in a factory.
= He worked in a factory before, but he doesn't work there now.
= 그는 예전에 공장에서 일했지만 지금은 더 이상 거기서 일하지 않습니다.

Dave used to work in a factory. Now he works in a supermarket.
데이브는 예전에 공장에서 일했습니다. 지금은 슈퍼마켓에서 일합니다.

주어used to동사원형

I / you / we / they	used to	be / work / have / play
he / she / it	used to	be / work / have / play

모든 주어에 같은 형태를 씁니다. he/she/it도 used to를 씁니다.

✅ I used to like chocolate.

❌ He use to work there. (WRONG — 반드시 used to)
❌ She uses to have long hair. (WRONG — 항상 used to, 주어에 따라 변하지 않음)

Chapter 2 : 과거와 현재의 차이 / The Difference Between Past and Now

On the left she writes: PAST
왼쪽에 씁니다. 과거

 

On the right she writes: NOW
오른쪽에 씁니다. 지금

 

She says: "Used to belongs only to the past."

"It tells us two things at the same time."

"First: something happened repeatedly in the past."

When I was a child I used to like chocolate.

I used to read a lot of books but I don't read much these days.

Liz has short hair now but it used to be very long.
리즈는 지금 머리가 짧지만 예전에는 매우 길었습니다.

 

They used to live on the same street as us so we used to see them a lot.

But we don't see them much anymore.

Liz's hair used to be very long. (= It was long before, but not now)
I used to be scared of dogs. (= I was scared before, but not now)
Allison used to have a piano. (= She had one before, but not now)

I used to play football.	예전에 축구를 했다. (지금은 안 한다)

He used to be shy.	예전에 수줍었다. (지금은 아니다)

의문문: Did you use to + 동사원형?

 

She says: "For negatives and questions, used to changes."
선생님이 말씀하십니다. "부정문과 의문문에서는 used to가 바뀝니다."

The used to column is not a sad list.

Every "used to" is proof of change.
